David Todd

David Todd, Director of Jarodd Enterprises Pty Ltd has been involved in the hairdressing industry since 1973.

David started his career with L’Oreal Hairdressing as a salesman before starting Jarodd Enterprises in 1980. Initially, it was a wholesale company selling a range of products to hairdressers. In 1992 the Managing Director of Weston Imports, Otto Filipich, organized for David to visit and train as a blade smith with a well known German scissor manufacturing company. Over the next eight years David returned to the factory many times to maintain and learn new skills.

Today Jarodd Enterprises specializes in scissor sharpening and sales. David went to great lengths to acquire the scissor sharpening equipment that is used in the final production stage in the manufacture of scissors in Germany.

David has also had a number of articles published in the Australian Hairdresser’s Journal explaining proper scissor maintenance. He has lectured at TAFE colleges around NSW, teaching hairdressing students about proper scissor care and maintenance. David has conducted seminars on all facets of scissor sales and maintenance for some of Australia’s leading wholesalers.

Micro Serration

A micro serrated scissor edge is a multi-purpose cutting edge. It provides a number of unique benefits in hairdressing. The primary benefit which gives micro serration its well deserved popularity is the fact that is can cut both wet and dry hair with ease. The micro serrated grooves in the cutting edge capture each strand of hair and ensure they are cut without slipping out. This is even the case with oily hair.

A micro serrated edge will also afford a level of protection against damage to the cutting edge. When cutting hair it is possible for your scissors to catch or collide with the comb, this can damage a straight cutting edge. This will cause real problems with the scissors performance when cutting hair. A micro serrated cutting edge however will tolerate such incidents while seeing no reduction in the cutting power of the edge.

Serrated edges are much harder to properly sharpen than a straight cutting edge because it requires preciseness and experience when working with the serrated edge. We employ many unique techniques when dealing with hairdressing scissors that have a micro serrated edge. We understand that while they may differ from a standard edge it is still important to ensure they are performing their best to ensure you are able to give your clients the quality cuts they desire.

No doubt that it is a necessity of a professional hairstylist to own at least one pair of Micro Serrated Scissors. It will not only contribute in his/her professional outlook, but will also give the versatility in the art of hair cutting.

Scissor Sharpening

A good pair of scissors are only as good as the condition of the cutting edge and the parts that make up the pair of scissors. For this reason it is essential that they are well maintained. This means they need to be sharp, correctly tightened and that all replaceable parts are replaced as they begin to wear from frequent use.

In order to provide you with the best possible service the following steps are taken to ensure that your scissors will perform at their best.

  • Scissors are taken apart.
  • Balancing: This involves checking that the blades are shaped correctly
and that the blades are in line.
  • First sharpening to form the basic edge.
  • Re-micro serrate scissors that have a serrated edge.
  • Hollow grinding inner blade faces.
  • Polishing the blade edges.
  • Hand honing the inner blade faces to obtain maximum sharpness and smoothness.
  • Assemble scissors replacing any damaged washers and test the cutting edge.
  • Re-point and polish the scissor points to ensure that the scissor cuts perfectly from the beginning of the blade to the tip without bending the hair or catching.
  • Oiling of scissor blades and screw assembly to ensure maximum protection.

This comprehensive service is one that should be carried out at least twice a year (Or more with heavy use). This is also something that only SSA can offer. There are people who claim to be scissor sharpeners that will simply sharpen the edge on their mobile grinding wheel in the back of their van/car. Just because a pair of scissors has a “sharpened edge” does not mean they are ready to give you the perfect cut that you and your customers so rightly demand.

If your scissors are not tightened, the washers are worn or the points are dull, not only will they not cut correctly but they will mean you work extra hard to still achieve a sub standard result.

So keep your primary tool in perfect condition for less than the cost of a new pair of scissors each year. We are sure you will love the results and see them returned to you in better condition than the day your bought them. We have flexible options for having your scissors sharpened. This includes pickup and drop off for the Sydney Metro region through to express post so you can send them in to us from anywhere in Australia and have them back within a week.

During the service we will dismantle the clippers, remove the built up hair and oils that can be left behind in and on the clippers after a cut.
